Remembering Thomas F. Healy

ltthomLt. Thomas F. Healy, Sr., passed away on February 6, 2003 after complications from cancer surgery. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn, sons Thomas, Jr. (Lt. Eng. 92); William, Michael (Lt. Eng. 45); Robert, their wives and 7 beautiful grandchildren.

Tom was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a friend to countless numbers of people who were drawn by his quiet and warm personality and generous spirit. He never missed an opportunity to lend a hand, coach a team or play golf with family or friends. Tom was a 32 year veteran of the New York City Fire Department and retired from L120 in 1997 following a line of duty injury. Throughout his years in the Department, Tom was affectionately known as “The Quiet Man”. He was a very loving and patient man and a man of few words. He led and taught by example.

He was diagnosed with Cancer in 2002 and passed away in early 2003 due to complications from cancer surgery. During his illness, Tom spent much time in New York’s Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital where he was fortunate to receive the best care available. During his stays at Sloan, his family stayed in nearby hotels. While his medical care was covered by insurance, the costs of travel and lodging for his family were not. Unfortunately, many families in similar situations are unable to meet the financial burden to stay close to their loved ones as they receive the necessary care to battle their illness. Tom recognized this and was grateful that his family had the financial ability to be close to him around the clock during this difficult time. It was Tom’s wish that other families not be unduly burdened by such costs and be able to focus their thoughts and prayers on their loved ones.

To honor those wishes, the Healy family has established the Lt. Thomas F. Healy Foundation. The Foundation is organized as a not-for profit organization, to be able bring comfort to firefighters and their families dealing with the challenges of cancer. The charity’s intention is to help cover costs not covered by insurance while a NYC firefighter or member of his or her family is receiving cancer related surgery.

We will all miss Tom’s enduring spirit, but the Lt. Thomas F. Healy Foundation, aims to ensure that the generosity of Tom Healy, “the Quiet Man”, lives on to help those in need.
